VAN VLEES NAAR VEGAN / FROM BEEF TO VEGAN

Dit is een film die een BAFTA prijs (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) in Ottawa, Canada (2018) heeft gewonnen.
Een Engelse Vegetarische Vleesboer die jarenlang vleeskoeien had gehouden, kon het niet over zijn hart krijgen om zijn 73 koeien naar het slachthuis te brengen, en in plaats daarvan liet hij ze naar een sanctuary  brengen, waar ze tot aan hun natuurlijke dood kan blijven. Als hij ze naar de slacht had gebracht, had hij  € 50.000  verdiend. Hij vond het belangrijker voor zijn geweten om ze in leven te houden. In de loop der jaren had hij meer gevoel voor zijn koeien gekregen. Voor hem waren ze niet meer stukken vlees, maar intelligente en gevoelige dieren, die, net zoals wij, emoties tonen.
De Engelse Vegan Society hielp hem om een nieuw plan te maken voor zijn boerderij. Hij is nu bezig om een Vegan Boerderij te creëren, waarvoor hij veel steun krijgt. /
This is a BAFTA award (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts: The Award was won in Ottawa, Canada, 2018) winning film of a U.K. Vegetarian Beef Farmer who saved his 73 cows from being slaughtered by sending them to a sanctuary instead. If they had been killed it would have earned him 50.000 pounds, but saving them was more important to him. He couldn’t stand the thought that these cows who he had raised since they were young and with whom he had a built up a bond of friendship would be sent to the slaughterhouse. The UK Vegan Society helped the farmer to make new modern plans for his farm, and he has now decided to start a new type of vegan farming and is getting a lot of support.

73 KOEIEN, ALLEMAAL MET EEN PERSOONLIJKHEID.
Een lezer die een hart voor koeien heeft vanwege hun warme, emotionele en intelligente karakter, wil het succes van het winnen van de Bafta prijs door de film over de 73 koeien, vieren door 7 aspecten van hun karakter met ons te delen.

  1. Koeien zijn intelligent, ja het is echt waar. Het gezegde ‘Een groot hoofd, grote hersens’ is waar. Het is niet waar dat ze stom zijn. Meerdere studies hebben aangetoond dat ze in staat zijn om problemen op te lossen door kritisch te denken. Ze kunnen ook eerdere ervaringen gebruiken om toekomstige acties te bepalen.

  2. Koeien hebben emoties, net als de mens. Ze kunnen gelukkig, ongelukkig, humeurig of gevoelig zijn. Je ziet, dat wanneer koeien voor het eerst naar buiten kunnen na de winter maanden, ze vol vreugde over het veld huppelen.

  3. Koeien kunnen vaste vriendschappen sluiten. Het is aangetoond dat als ze samen zijn met een goede vriend, hun stressgehalte minder wordt.

  4. Koeien hebben een goed geheugen. Net als een olifant weten ze nog dingen van vroeger te herinneren. Ze weten ook altijd hun eten, water en onderdak te vinden.\

  5. Koeien houden van hun baby’s. Ze hebben een heel sterke band met hun kalf. Dit is wat de koeienindustrie zo wreed maakt. Ze hebben een heel moederlijke band en geven veel aandacht en bescherming aan hun kind. Deze band blijft hun hele leven lang.

  6. Het verdriet van een koe is een van de droevigste dingen die je kan meemaken. Ik heb ooit een moeder koe achter haar kalf aan zien rennen, dat door de boer weggehaald was en op een trailer achter een tractor afgevoerd werd. Een moeder koe huilt, vaak dagenlang, als haar kind wordt weggehaald, en valt in een depressie.

  7. Koeien kunnen 20 jaar worden. In de bio-industrie worden ze niet ouder dan 18-24 maanden, en melkkoeien 4 of 5 jaar. Kalveren die geslacht worden mogen een paar maanden leven.

73 COWS, ALL WITH A PERSONALITY
One of the many reasons I was so pleased that 73 Cows won this award is, well, I love cows. Having been brought up next to a dairy farm I am well aware that cows are gentle animals who are affectionate, emotional and intelligent. So as a celebration of 73 Cows winning the BAFTA for best short film I thought I would I share with you 7 things about cows that you might not know.

  1. Cows are clever, yes that’s right, the old saying of big head, big brain is actually true here. It is a myth that cows are stupid and in fact studies have shown that cows are capable of critical thinking to resolve problems. They are also capable of learning by association which means they can use previous experiences to determine future actions.

  2. Cows are emotional, yes that’s right just like human’s cows have emotions and can be happy, sad even moody or sensitive. You have probably seen pictures of cows when allowed outside for the first time after being couped up for ages, they run and prance and that’s right literally jump for joy.

  3. Cows form close relationships, I have seen this first hand with a cow from our neighbouring farm and one of our dogs. When they were both outside they were inseparable and would lick each other continually. Cows do actually form particular friendships and have “best friends” studies have shown when they are with their “close friends” their stress levels decrease and vica versa.

  4. Cows have great memories, yes we know an elephant never forgets but cows also have great memories and are very good at remembering things even after long periods of time. Cows also have an excellent spatial memory enabling them to remember where things are located such as food, water and shelter.

  5. Cows love their babies, the maternal bond between a cow and her baby is tremendously strong which is why dairy farming is so sad. Cows have very strong maternal bonds and make very attentive and protective mothers. The bond continues after weaning with mother and baby actually remaining close to each other for life.

  6. Cows grieve, one of the saddest things I have ever seen is a cow running after her baby which is being taken away by a farmer on the back of a tractor. When a baby is taken away the mother will cry, often for days and fall in to depression.

  7. Cows can live to over 20, yes that’s right outside of the farm environment a cow can live up to the ripe old age of 20. Of course not every cow would do this but it still far exceeds the 18-24 months that cows who are raised for meat get. Or the 4-5years for dairy cattle once their milk production slows or of course the worst of all the calves slaughtered for veal at just a few months old.
